Communication Restrictions During Military Drills in Taiwan

The Taiwanese government will conduct air defense drills from Friday, August 7 to Thursday, August 13, 2026. In addition to the annual air defense drills, Taiwan will conduct a “mobile data speed reduction drill” for the first time in 2026.

Outlying Islands Region: Kinmen County, Lienchiang County, Penghu County
・Wednesday, August 12, 13:30–14:00
Eastern Region: Hualien County, Taitung County
・Thursday, August 13, 14:30–15:00
Northern Region: Yilan County, Keelung City, Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County
During these drills, the mobile data speed reduction drill will also be conducted on Monday, August 10 and Thursday, August 13. Accordingly, local mobile data communications will be restricted during the applicable time periods.

Central region (Taichung City, Miaoli County, Nantou County, Changhua County, Yunlin County, Chiayi County, Chiayi City)
・August 13 (Thu) 14:30–15:00
Northern region (Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Keelung City, Yilan County, Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County)
*The speed reduction drill will be conducted only in these 14 counties and cities.
Scope of impact
Communication will not be completely stopped, but the speed will be restricted.

Purpose
Assuming disruptions to communication infrastructure due to disasters or cyberattacks, this drill aims to:
・Verify the government’s response capabilities
・Raise public awareness of the importance of diversifying and backing up communication methods.
Other information
・Operations will be managed so that emergency calls such as 119 and 110, as well as medical institutions and public transportation, are not affected.
・During the 30-minute drill period, the regular air defense drill will also be conducted, including sirens, traffic control, and evacuation guidance.
